Stephan Reusse (* 1954 in Pinneberg ) is a German artist .

life and work

Reusse trained in photojournalism at the Folkwang School in Essen. During his studies with Harry Kramer , he began to emphasize photographs, developed forms of burning photographs into ceramics and opened up thermographs as a space for artistic activity.

In Reusse's artistic work, performances, objects (including carpets) and installations, neon works, laser works and drawings on paper can be found that maintain complex relationships on methodological, image-theoretical / media-reflective and content-related levels. The experimental, the performance, the exploration of "apparatus realities" and their possible interconnections with abstract painting are dedicated to the work on "authentic, non-consumable pictures" (Stephan Reusse).

From 1998 to 1999 he spent two years working at CalArts in Los Angeles. There he developed an interest in social messages, as shown, for example, in his work group "Sleeper / Victims", his pictures of homeless people. His group of works of "artist portraits" not only relies on staged photos of the other person, but also conveys his perception and examination of the work and the person of other artists. These include a. the groups of works entitled "Collaborations". These include portraits of and collaborations with Joseph Beuys , John Baldessari , Paul Thek , Rosemarie Trockel , Jeff Koons , Nam June Paik and many others.

The laser work that has emerged in recent years is based on vectorizations. They are based on real - filmed - movements and were not generated from a virtual world. He describes these works as "imaginary light sculptures".
