Tegelön is an island belonging to Sweden in the Stockholm archipelago .

location

The island belongs to the municipality of Nacka and is located in Höggarnsfjärden , south of the ship passage leading from Stockholm to the Baltic Sea . Tegelön is surrounded by several smaller islands. In the north are Lördan , Fredan and Onsdan och Torsdan , to the east Tisdan and Måndan and south of Getholmen . Tegelön is inhabited, with mainly summer houses. The partially forested island extends from west to east for about 1.5 kilometers and from north to south, with a width of up to about 450 meters.

Public ferry connections exist over the landing stage Tegelön brygga on the north side of the island.

history

The island was first mentioned in a document from the 1530s. The name of the island was then still Maderö. From 1667 until the 1880s, Tegelön was part of Velamsunds gård . In the 17th and 18th centuries, there was a brickworks on a bay on the south side of the island , from whose existence the name of the island goes back. Tegel is the Swedish term for brick . In the 1850s, several summer villas were built on Tegelön. In the 1870s the island was leased to Alfred Sandahl, who had some summer houses built. In 1880 the merchant Emil Egnell bought Velamsunds gård and had other villas built. In 1880 there were 17 villas on Tegelön. In the 1880s and 1890s various other villas were built, mainly along the beaches. The older villas have large, irregularly shaped lots. Steamboat connections existed, which stopped at four piers on the island (Toppudden, Vårfruudden, Wimret and Baggetorp) in the 1890s.

Some of the summer houses are still named after the original inhabitants of the island, such as Lindset after the skipper and fisherman Carl Magnus Lind and Wimret after the day laborer Johan Wimmer. Further summer houses were built from the 1930s onwards. Today there are more than 80 houses on Tegelön.
