Onsdan and Torsdan

Onsdan och Torsdan, in the background Tegelön

Onsdan och Torsdan is an island belonging to Sweden in the Stockholm archipelago .

The island, built on with several buildings, belongs to the municipality of Nacka and is located immediately north of the island of Tegelön in Höggarnsfärden . The ship passage from the Baltic Sea to Stockholm runs north of Ondans och Torsdans . The island extends from north to south for about 80 meters, with a width of up to 50 meters.

The name of the island has been used since 1906 and means Wednesday and Thursday in German . It fits into the row of neighboring islands. From southeast to northwest lie the islands of Måndan (Monday), Tisdan (Tuesday), Onsdan och Torsdan (Wednesday and Thursday), Fredan (Friday) and Lördan (Saturday). There is no island in the series with a name referring to Sunday. The double name Onsdan och Torsdan goes back to the fact that they were originally two islands that merged into one island in the course of the land uplift around 1959. The reason for the unusual naming is unclear. Presumably, the name was a continuation after an island, Fredan, possibly with a reference to the Nordic goddess Freya , was given a name that refers to a day of the week. Other assumptions suggest that farmers used the small islands as pasture on the weekday and that the cattle stayed on Tegelön on Sundays.
