history

New types of locomotives and trains were developed for the 1959 Federal Garden Show in Dortmund . Initially, four of the tractors now known as "Porscheloks" were in use in the Westfalenpark . Three four-axle passenger cars were available for this. Another locomotive was delivered in 1959 and used as a reserve. Further locomotives were delivered to Saarbrücken in 1959 and used there from 1960. The design of the front section of the locomotive was based on the optics of the Porsche 356 using components from the DKW 3 = 6 , and they were powered by a Porsche industrial engine with a displacement of 1,600 cubic centimeters and an output of 56 hp. Overall, the design was based on the TEE multiple unit , which was modern at the end of the 1950s . The railways were created based on an idea by the businessman Henry Escher. Seventeen trains of this type were built, which also ran on other garden show trains in later years.

The Porscheloks were used at different locations, mostly initially for a garden show: Dortmund, Westfalenpark , from the Federal Horticultural Show 1959 to 1990, Saarbrücken, German-French Garden , since the garden show 1960 to today, Amsterdam, Amstelpark , Floriade 1972 and 1975 to the present day, Karlsruhe , Schlossgarten (since BUGA 1967 to today; temporarily shut down), Cologne Rheinpark (BUGA 1971, and 2001 to today), Hamburg IGA 1963 and 1973 (1963 to 1982), Mannheim Federal Garden Show 1975 , Stuttgart Federal Garden Show 1977 in the Schlossgarten, Bonn Federal Garden Show 1979 and Ulm State Garden Show 1980.

Porsche railways were a fixed feature of the federal garden shows and international garden shows for over two decades. Another gas-powered train model was developed exclusively for the 1965 Federal Garden Show in Essen, and the tried-and-tested Killesbergbahn was in use in Stuttgart in 1961 .

Whereabouts

Restored “Porsche locomotive” in the Rheinpark

Some Porschelokomotives are still preserved and in operation today, including the yellow Porschelok of the Schlossgartenbahn Karlsruhe , the red / white Porschelok of the Saarbrücken Park Railway and the red Porschelok of the Kleinbahn Köln . In the Netherlands, a white and black painted Porschelok has been in use in Amstelpark since the Floriade in 1972. The Amsteltrein also has original wagons, so that a complete train set has been preserved.

One Porschelok is still being restored in Amsterdam, Karlsruhe and Cologne.
