The Stephansplatz is a place in Karlsruhe Downtown West . Markets are regularly held on the square, which was created in 1901, and there is an underground car park under the square. The space is used for public viewing at major sporting events .

Naming

The naming of Stephanplatz goes back to Heinrich von Stephan . Von Stephan was General Post Director of the German Reich , and the square borders on the former main post office building in Karlsruhe.

history

The Landgraben has flowed across the area of the square since the 16th century . While the canal was initially open, it was built over from 1815 and now runs underground under Stephanplatz.

The square was laid out in 1901. Before that there was an infantry barracks there from 1827 to 1897 . Since 1897 there has been a sandstone building next to it. The building was initially used as the Reichspost telegraph building, now it houses the Postgalerie shopping center . In 1918 a wing was added to the post office building facing Stephanplatz. The building is a historical monument.

In 1903 the architect Hermann Billing was commissioned to design a monumental fountain for the square. The Stephanienbrunnen was completed in 1905.

In the southeast corner of the square in the triangle of Waldstrasse, Karlstrasse and Amalienstraße there is a low-rise building built in 1930, which is owned by the city. It was initially used as a gas station and shop with a public toilet . The building has been rented to the owners of Karl-Apotheke since 1942.

After a redesign, the square was reopened in 1976. In the years 1999 to 2001, the square was completely redesigned again as part of the conversion of the main post office into a shopping center. An underground car park was also built under the square. The Stephanienbrunnen had to be completely dismantled and rebuilt.

Development

On the square there is currently a pharmacy, the fountain and, as access to the underground car park, an elevator and two portal buildings, one of which houses a snack bar that had a building there before the square was converted, while the other has an ice cream parlor that is currently being set up is not used. The outdoor catering in the area of the square, which is slightly elevated due to the moat and the underground car park, is now looked after by a restaurant in the Postgalerie.

In 2013 there was speculation about a redesign of the square towards increased commercial use. Serious concerns arose from parts of the population, so that, among other things, a petition was launched against the plans and a monument protection for the low-rise building built in 1930 was demanded. Since a partial demolition was carried out in the 1970s and the canopy was redesigned, this cannot be implemented.
