Stephanus I Kindergarten

The Stephanus-I-Kindergarten is a building inaugurated in 1969 by Hans Scharoun in Wolfsburg - Detmerode , Robert-Schuman-Straße 37, in Lower Saxony . In addition to the theater, which was completed in 1973, it is one of two buildings by Scharoun in Wolfsburg and the only kindergarten he designed.

history

The Detmerode district was founded in the early 1960s. It is characterized by a mixture of high-rise buildings, apartment buildings and a few single-family houses. Especially young families with many children moved there. In 1964 the West Berlin architect Scharoun was commissioned to plan a kindergarten with a mother's school for the Evangelical Lutheran parish in the northeast of the district . Until 1966 he had to revise his design. Among other things, the mother's school, a gym, a dormitory and a second apartment had to be painted. The kindergarten is numbered 241 in Scharoun's catalog raisonné. The project manager was Peter-Fritz Hofmeyer-Zlotnik.

Architecture and use

The building was designed in the style of functionalism . The focus is on the needs of the children: the rooms are characterized by different sizes, like in an apartment, by different ceiling heights and each with access to the outside area. Each group room has a washroom and a cloakroom. The floor plan is irregular. The entrance area is characterized by portholes and skylights . His 1951 design for an elementary school in Darmstadt , which was one of the Darmstadt masterpieces but was never realized, served as a model. The building is a listed building .

The kindergarten is surrounded by a large outdoor area.

The facility is run by the Evangelical Lutheran St. Stephen's Congregation, whose center is the St. Stephen 's Church . The sponsor is the Evangelical Church District Wolfsburg- Wittingen . In 2013, 67 children attended kindergarten. The kindergarten is integrative .
