Life

After graduation from the University of Miami in 1971, spent a lot of time Hayes in search of authentic martial arts traditions and practicing Tang Soo Do . In Japan in June 1975 he met the teacher he had been looking for all these years, Masaaki Hatsumi , founder of the Bujinkan Dōjō .

Hayes returned to the USA and started the "ninja boom" of the 1980s with his friend Bud Malmstrom. During this time he was instrumental in promoting ninjutsu in America and Western Europe. Many of today's great Bujinkan teachers in America began training with Hayes during this time, including Bud Malmstrom, Jack Hoban, Mark Davis, Jean-Pierre Seibel, Courtland Elliott.

1991 Hayes received the Tokudo -Priesterweihe in Tendai - Buddhism from Tendai master and Vajra Acharya, Clark Jikai Choffy. In 1993 Hayes received the judan (tenth degree black belt) from Hatsumi . In 1997 he founded his own martial arts style, To-Shin Do, based on his life experiences and knowledge of Budo taijutsu , but mainly influenced by his work as a bodyguard for Tendzin Gyatsho , the fourteenth Dalai Lama of Tibet . Hayes also founded a school in Buddhism, the Blue Lotus Assembly.

In 2006, Hayes name plaque was removed from the Bujinkan Honbu. Although this has been confirmed by both sides, there are no reliable statements about the reason.

Hayes and his company SKH Quest continue to work to make the art of martial arts accessible to everyone. The SKH-Quest network currently comprises 18 schools in 12 countries and a further two schools in England.
