Stepney Green is an underground station on the London Underground in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 2, at the intersection of Mile End Road and Globe Road. The District Line and the Hammersmith & City Line operate here . In 2014, 5.43 million passengers used the station. Near the campus of is Queen Mary and Westfield College .

The station was opened on June 2, 1902 by the Whitechapel and Bow Railway , a joint venture of the Metropolitan District Railway (predecessor of the District Line) and the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway . Electric subways operated from 1905. In 1923, the station was owned by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway , after the railways were nationalized in 1950 to London Underground. The Metropolitan Line first served Stepney Green on March 30, 1936 (the branch line to Barking was transferred to the Hammersmith & City Line in 1988).
