Sterling was a US truck brand owned by Daimler AG .

history

Sterling Motor Truck was founded in Milwaukee in 1916 . In 1917, during the First World War , Sterling and other companies participated in the construction of the Liberty truck . In 1932, Sterling built Cummins diesel engines into his truck and took over the truck manufacturer LaFrance-Republic in Alma ( Gratiot County ). Sterling was taken over by White Truck in 1951 ; until 1953 trucks were offered under the name Sterling-White. In 1951, White Truck took over the service and sales of Freightliner . The double name White-Freightliner was used from 1963 to 1977. In 1981 Daimler-Benz took over the Freightliner Corporation.

In 1997 the Freightliner Corporation , which belongs to Daimler-Benz (now Daimler AG ), took over the heavy truck division of the American Ford group. From 1998 products were again sold under the name Sterling.

On October 14, 2008, Daimler AG announced that it would discontinue production of the Sterling Trucks brand. This step was justified with the economic situation on the US market. At the same time, two plants in the USA and Canada are to be closed. This will affect around 3,500 employees, announced Daimler. The Canadian Sterling plant closed in March 2009. The Sterling plants in the US should follow in June 2010. In September 2009, Daimler moved away from the planned closure of the Sterling plant. A very large military contract from the US government made it possible to keep the Sterling USA site. The Sterling brand was discontinued in the US in 2009.
