Replacement structure of the star gate next to the semicircular tower of the city wall (2008)

The original Sterntor in Bonn was built around 1244 at the end of Sternstrasse and was part of the medieval city fortifications.

In 1898, the gate that remained as the last gate castle of the former city fortifications was torn down despite the intervention of Kaiser Wilhelm II in order to improve the flow of traffic. (Coordinates: 50 ° 44 ′ 8.8 ″  N , 7 ° 5 ′ 54.1 ″  E - old location) Only two years later - in 1900 - a replacement structure was moved a few meters under the same name on the north side of Bottlerplatz or at the Vivatsgasse created. It consists only partially of the remains of the former star gate, otherwise of a remnant piece of the city wall and its only surviving semicircular tower . The corner turret and the surrounding battlements assign it to the historicism of the time . It is a listed building as a monument .

In the outer archway, two portraits are inserted, the crucified with Mary and John and the " Mother of God with seven sorrows" from 1650.

In 2002 there was the “Lichtblicke” installation by the light artists Regine Vogel / Johannes Dinnebier from the Center for International Light Art at the Sterntor .

reception

"As appealing as the complex looks, one has to complain about the profound changes and the loss of the original complex, because the Sterntor was one of the most remarkable monuments of its kind and surpassed the existing city gates in Cologne in artistic rank."

“The loss of this building at the entrance to Sternstrasse as a testimony to history with the radiance of urban comfort can hardly be overestimated. (...) The star gate, which was put aside from the remains of the historical complex on the last semicircular tower of the city wall, has only a vague memory value with its few original components. "
