Steve Huffman (born November 12, 1983 in San Francisco ) is an American web developer and entrepreneur . He is the co-founder and CEO of Reddit , a social news and discussion website that is ranked among the top 20 most visited websites in the world. He was also a co-founder of the travel website Hipmunk .

Life

He grew up in Warrenton , Virginia . At the age of 8 he started programming computers. He graduated from Wakefield School in The Plains in 2001 . He studied computer science at the University of Virginia (UVA) and graduated in 2005. In the same year he developed the website reddit.com together with his school friend Alexis Ohanian . Huffman and Ohanian sold Reddit in October 2006 to the media company Condé Nast Publications for a price between 10 and 20 million US dollars. Huffman stayed with Reddit until 2009 when he left his position as acting executive director. In 2010 he founded the travel website Hipmunk together with the author and software developer Adam Goldstein . The investor Y Combinator , who already played an important role in the founding of Reddit , acted as sponsor again .

He returned to Reddit on July 10, 2015 and has since served as managing director of the now outsourced and independent company. Before that, the previous managing director, Ellen Pao , had resigned.

Others

Huffmann lives in San Francisco, advocates net neutrality and is considered a prepper .
