A novel of development: the youthful, inexperienced first-person narrator Daniel spends an aimless time after graduating from school until he meets his first love, the exotic Rachel. However, her unfathomable character and her love for an older man do not allow Daniel to bind her to him. When his father, suffering from cancer and with whom he had a deep love-hate relationship, dies, he withdraws and begins to write fictional diaries of people he knows in order to understand their motives. After saying goodbye to Rachel, Daniel gives himself a new name and goes out into the world.
