The Steveder Way of the Cross is a 5.1-hectare-area natural monument in to Coesfeld belonging peasantry Stevede . The natural monument is named after the Way of the Cross , which leads through the columned beech forest on the southern slope of the Hünsberg . It is in close proximity to the Steved Cemetery.

The Way of the Cross

The first way of the cross at this point was donated in 1880 by the Schulze Hillert family, who own a farm in the neighborhood. This Way of the Cross comprised the usual fourteen stations of Christ's Passion. The heavily weathered and damaged stations were replaced in 1983 by modern sandstone blocks, the work of the Rheiner artist Joseph Krautwald . The Resurrection of Christ was added to the Stations of the Cross in Stevede as the 15th station . A 220 meter long, gently ascending and descending path leads past the stations through the forest, which has a bend of around 10 ° between the seventh and eighth stations. On the north side facing away from the path, the stations are flanked by a now overgrown beech hedge with sometimes bizarre shapes.

The natural monument

The Steved Way of the Cross with the surrounding beech forest was designated as a natural monument by the Coesfelder Heide - Flamschen landscape plan, which came into force on June 26, 1985 , in order to preserve a "part of the landscape that is particularly valuable in terms of cult and culture".
