Stephen McIntyre

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stephen McIntyre (* 1947) is a Canadian mining specialist and a critic of the common theses on global warming , especially against Michael E. Mann within the hockey stick controversy and the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies . A publication that was important for the public discussion of climate change was thwarted by means of a blog and the verification of statistical data. He is active on the web with the ClimateAudit blog .

Scientific background and professional activity

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Toronto . He turned down an MIT scholarship and instead completed philosophical, political and economic studies at the University of Oxford . McIntyre has worked in the field of ore exploration for over 30 years, in particular preparing and assessing feasibility studies and economic forecasts, as well as political analyzes for the Canadian government. He describes the experience he has gained here, especially with data series and corresponding economic conclusions, as essential for his criticism and methodology in his rejection of the hockey stick diagram.

The hockey stick chart controversy

Together with Ross McKitrick , McIntyre questioned the meaningfulness of the so-called hockey stick diagram from a publication by Michael E. Mann and other authors. The focus of the discussion was the unique speed of the current warming as well as the regional spread of the so-called Medieval Warm Period . In a later publication, McIntyre questioned the overall meaningfulness of a global average temperature.

After controversies in which Mann questioned the fundamental scientific suitability of the critics, McIntyre's criticism became internationally known. Mann also pointed out that many of his uncertainties and possible methodological inaccuracies were addressed in the context of his original study, which was neglected when the diagram was adopted in other studies. The IPCC's Fourth Assessment Report of 2007 rejects McIntyre's objections.

In connection with the hacker incident at the University of East Anglia's climate research center , McIntyre publicly called for Mann to be excluded from future peer review processes such as the editing of the IPCC reports. Michael Mann defended himself in a statement against the allegations and explained the context of the offending emails.

Personal

McIntyre is married with three children and two grandchildren.
