Political career

Since 2007 Paterson has held a seat on the Stirling Regional Council. Labor politician Anne McGuire has represented Paterson's Stirling constituency in the British House of Commons since 1997 . She did not run for the general election in 2015 and the Labor Party appointed Johanna Boyd as her successor. For the SNP, Paterson applied for the constituency mandate. With the massive increase in votes by the SNP in these elections, Paterson clearly won the mandate with a 45.6% share of the vote and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. In the early general election 2017, Paterson was narrowly defeated by the Conservative Stephen Kerr and subsequently left the House of Commons.
