Lady Anne Catherine McGuire DBE (* 26. May 1949 in Easter House , Glasgow as Anne Catherine Long ) is a Scottish politician.

Life

McGuire was born Anne Long in 1949 in the Easterhouse district of Glasgow, one of four children of a railroad worker and a shoe seller . She attended St Francis Secondary School and the University of Glasgow , from which she graduated with a Masters degree in Politics and History. McGuire is married and has two children. On New Year's Day 2015, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire in the second highest degree, Dame Commander .

Political career

Her father was already active in local politics. McGuire joined the Labor Party's college group and rose within the party over the years. In the run-up to the 1997 general election , a female candidate for the Stirling constituency was searched for as early as 1995 . McGuire won the internal vote and first ran national elections in 1997. She ran against the incumbent Conservative Scotland Minister Michael Forsyth, among others . With a share of the vote of 47.5%, she won the election and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . In the following elections in 2001 , 2005 and 2010 , McGuire held her mandate. In the run-up to the 2015 general election , McGuire announced her retirement from active politics and resigned from the House of Commons at the end of the parliamentary term. SNP candidate Steven Paterson won the constituency mandate .

McGuire held various positions in Parliament. In 2002 she held a junior ministerial position in the Scotland Office . Following the 2005 elections, she was appointed State Secretary for the Disabled. In 2010 Labor Party leader Ed Miliband appointed McGuire as Parliamentary Private Secretary .
