Stevnsfort
Stevnsfort (Danish Stevnsfortet ) was a largely subterranean fortress from the Cold War era on the Danish Stevns peninsula . The fortress was supposed to control the southern entrance to the Oresund . Together with the Langelands Fort on the Langelandsbelt , it was supposed to prevent Warsaw Pact ships from passing from the Baltic Sea towards the North Sea or the Atlantic .
The fortress was planned in 1951 and then built quickly. The fortress had 1.7 km long corridors in 18 m depth of the limestone rock and in 1945 the German 15 cm SK C / 28 L / 55 with a range of 22 km. The guns were originally part of the German battleship Gneisenau . After the Gneisenau suffered a severe hit in an air raid by the Royal Air Force on the night of February 26th to 27th, 1942 , they were removed and used in various coastal batteries. Among other things, two gun turrets of the 15 cm medium artillery were brought to the Danish island of Fanø and installed there on the roof of the Stevnsfort.
Integrated into the NATO structures, the Stevnsfort was modernized in the 1980s and equipped with digital technology. The big guns on the fortress roof were shut down; large operating teams were no longer required.
The fortress has been open to the public since 2008 and is a museum.
