Stewart Duke-Elder

Sir William Stewart Duke-Elder (born April 22, 1898 in Dundee , † March 27, 1978 ) was a leading British ophthalmologist and eye surgeon in his day.

Duke-Elder wrote widely used books on ophthalmology (such as The practice of refraction , 1928, 9th revised edition 1978), published 15 volumes of System of Ophtalmology and seven volumes of a Textbook of Ophtalmology . He was editor of the British Journal of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Literature and helped found the Institute of Ophtalmology in London, now part of the University of London. He headed the institute until 1965.

In 1960 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society . He was the official ophthalmologist of Edward VIII , George VI. and Elizabeth II. He was a Knight (Knight Commander, later Knight Grand Cross) of the Royal Victorian Order (GVCO) and was knighted in 1933. He was President of the International Council of Ophthalmology. In 1957 he received the Lister Medal , in 1975 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
