Stewart Mackie Houston (born August 20, 1949 in Dunoon ) is a former Scottish football player and coach .

life and career

Player career

Houston began his career in the youth of the Glasgow Rangers . 1967 came his first professional station, Chelsea FC . With the Blues he was English Cup winner and won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1971. In 1972 and 1973 he played for Brentford FC before he was signed by Manchester United . With the Red Devils he won the English Cup for the second time. In 1980 he went to Sheffield United for three years and Houston was under contract with Colchester United for the next three years until his retirement . Internationally, he played once for the Scottish national football team .

Coaching career

Houston began his coaching career in 1986 as assistant coach to George Graham at Arsenal FC . He stayed with his trainer until February 1995. Graham had to abdicate because of a bribe scandal and the Scot took over the scepter of the Gunners until June. Under his leadership, the team made it to the final of the European Cup winners' competition, which was lost. In June 1995 he became an assistant coach again. After Bruce Rioch's abdication , he took over the Gunners for the second time from August to September 1996. Arsène Wenger was coach of the Gunners and Houston went to the Queens Park Rangers to coach the team there. After little success he was sacked and again assistant coach of George Graham, when this Tottenham Hotspur coached. In 2002, the Scot became a short-term coach of FC Walsall .
