The Stewart Strait is a 3-km wide Strait off the north-western tip of South Georgia . It lies between the Willis Islands and Bird Island .
The British explorer James Cook passed through and mapped this sea route in 1775. It was known as Willis Sound among whale and seal hunters . Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations re-mapping and naming in 1930. It is named after Walter Stuart, a customs officer in South Georgia at the time.
