Georg Straus

Georg Straus (born September 18, 1926 in Bad Kissingen ; † January 13, 2014 there ) was a German local politician, association official and entrepreneur .

Life

In his youth, Georg Straus attended the Regensburger Domspatzen boarding school and the Kissinger Realgymnasium (now Jack Steinberger Gymnasium ). At the age of 16 he was drafted as a flak helper. When he came of age, he was used as a soldier in World War II for about a year . After the war, he acquired the general university entrance qualification at the Kissinger Realgymnasium as part of the notabiturs .

Entrepreneurial activity

After graduating from high school, Georg Straus joined his parents' painting business in Bad Kissingen, which he gradually took over completely until the mid-1950s.

Political commitment

Georg Straus was elected to the city council for the first time in 1972 and was a permanent member until 1996. He served as the second mayor of Bad Kissingen on behalf of Hans Weiss from 1978 to 1984. He was then elected mayor in 1984 . He held this office until 1990. That year he lost the runoff election against his successor Christian Zoll .

As Lord Mayor, he also devoted himself to reconciliation and active contact with former Jewish citizens who had to leave Germany as part of the Holocaust. The result of these efforts was, among other things, the book and the permanent exhibition “Jewish Life in Bad Kissingen”, which has existed since 1988. This also resulted in the establishment of contact with the Kissinger born Jack Steinberger , with whom he had a close friendship.

In addition, Georg Straus was one of the initiators of the Kissinger Summer . This was launched under his political leadership in 1986.

Association activity

Georg Straus was involved in the Bad Kissingen painters and varnishers' guild and between 1970 and 1983 its chief master. He was named honorary master because of his special merits.
