The Steyr Mannlicher Model 1901 was an Austrian self-loading pistol. Its designer was Ferdinand Ritter von Mannlicher .
technology
Starting with his successful rifles with a fixed box magazine, Mannlicher also turned to pistol construction. His designs resulted in a (for its time) very balanced pistol around 1900. The handle housed a fixed magazine that could be filled with a loading strip from above. A spring-loaded cam delayed the return movement of the slide until the projectile had left the barrel and the gas pressure had dropped. However, this was not a rigid lock, but only a form of the ground lock . This made an uncomplicated and solid mechanism possible, but with the 7.63 × 21 Mannlicher caliber only ammunition of limited strength could be used.
For this reason, the imperial and royal army of Austria-Hungary rejected this weapon, the performance of the cartridge used did not meet their expectations. Instead, the armed forces of Argentina were interested in the pistol. The arms factory in Steyr received an order for 5,000 pieces; this corresponds to about half of the total edition of the Mannlicher pistol. The high processing standards and the simple and low-maintenance construction were decisive for the purchase .
