The Steyr 90 series (also type 90 or Plus series) is a truck that was built in several variants from 1968 to 1978 by Steyr Daimler Puch AG in Steyr ( Upper Austria ). It replaced the Steyr 680-880 series . These vehicles had a very wide range of uses, from distribution vehicles to long-haul vehicles. All-wheel drive versions were used as construction site vehicles and in forestry. In 1978 the Steyr 91 series replaced the 90 series.

prehistory

Since the Austrian truck market was very limited in terms of unit numbers, the structures of the European commercial vehicle manufacturers gradually changed in the 1960s (cooperations, takeovers) and a liberalization of the markets ( EEC ) became apparent, Steyr began to realign truck production ponder. Exports to the EEC and EFTA countries were no longer cost-covering. In the mid-1960s, yields and quantities fell dramatically. Cooperation negotiations with other truck manufacturers, including MAN , Magirus-Deutz , Scania , Fiat and Daimler-Benz, were the result, but failed.

It was decided to develop a new series, which should also include type adjustment and standardization of components. The result was the BR 90 series, which was particularly successful in Austria and on a par with the European competition in terms of quality and economy. The Steyr 590-690 series was also presented in 1969 , which was equipped with a modified cabin produced under license from Hanomag in Steyr and replaced the Steyr 380-480 series and Steyr 580-586 series .

cabin

The clearest feature of the new series was the newly developed driver's cab (type 160) for the heavy variants, which was used with a few modifications until the 1990s (even longer in Chinese cooperation). It was characterized by generous glass surfaces, which enabled a good all-round view, which was a great advantage, especially in distribution and construction site traffic, the main areas of application. It was not designed to be tiltable, but had a front cover through which the maintenance elements were easily accessible. Other features were the standard roof hatch and the asymmetrical grille. There was also a long-haul cab with two berths.
