Steyr 91 (2005)

The Steyr Type 91 forms the basis of various truck series with the WD 615 engine from Steyr Daimler Puch AG. It was the successor to the Steyr 90-Plus series .

construction

The driver's cab of the large trucks was tiltable for all engine versions from the 91 series and had significantly improved noise and thermal insulation .

The small cab was heavily redesigned, the redesigned front (bumper and bonnet) was made of plastic.

Models

  • In 1978 the successor series of the Steyr 90-Plus series with the types 991, 1291 and 1491 was presented.
  • 791 and 891 followed in 1979, and from 1980 the 4-axle 1891 (for Switzerland and the Netherlands).
  • In 1982 the new "small" types Steyr 591 and 691 were presented.

Military vehicles ( Steyr 91M ) were developed from the all-wheel drive versions Steyr 1291 and 1491 and presented in 1983. These vehicles were successfully sold. Among other things, 1200 pieces went to Canada (in cooperation with the partner company utdc as "Percheron"), and vehicles were also delivered to Saudi Arabia and Greece. Like the plant in Steyr, the plant in Greece continued to build the old types 680m and 680m3 in addition to the 91M series until the end of 1984.

From 1988 Steyr took part in the US Army tender for the new FMTV ( family of medium tactical vehicles , i.e. 4 × 4 with 2.5 tons and 6 × 6 with 5 tons). Steyr brought the 12M18 concept via Stewart & Stevenson in Houston and received the order for 17 prototypes that were built in Steyr. After nine months of testing, the Steyr concept was awarded the contract. The Army needed more than 60,000 trucks, they were built by various US companies according to the Steyr concept, Steyr also supplied important parts and cab panels.

Engines

The 6-cylinder engine WD 614 had been further developed into the WD 615 with 126/130 mm bore / stroke. This increased its output to 150 kW as a naturally aspirated engine, 190 kW as a charger and 205 kW with charge air cooling.

The smaller 6-cylinder WD 610 also had a larger displacement (WD 612 with 108 / 120mm W / H = 6595 cm 3 ) and now delivered 105 kW or 125 kW as a charger and 155 kW with charge air cooling. For the types Steyr 591 and 691, the output was throttled to 100 kW. This engine had already been used a good year earlier for fire service chassis 790 and 790 all-wheel drive (see above).

The V8 engine WD 815 was also given a higher output a little later (330 hp turbo). A significantly more powerful V10 and a V12 engine were developed for this V8 in cooperation with Pol-Mot . This V12 developed 550 hp with turbo and charge air cooling - but these two engines never went into series production. A 12-liter 6-cylinder with a completely (wet) noise-insulated design was developed as a replacement for the V8, which, however, did not go into series production due to the high tool costs.

Foreign production

The China National Heavy Duty Truck Group (CNHTC) had the Steyr 91 in its program as the main component of its production (9000 trucks in 1998). It was mainly delivered to MAN Germany. The engines are still being built in China by Weichai Power and are used in a variety of ways.
