The Steyr 680M was a truck of the Steyr brand. It was produced from 1960 to approx. 1986 by the former Steyr Daimler Puch AG in Austria and in their subsidiary in Greece.
Technical specifications
The vehicle is powered by a liquid-cooled , six-cylinder four - stroke diesel engine of the engine series WD-609 (pre-chamber injection) or WD-610 (direct injection) with 88 kW (120 PS), or from 1979 with the one from the Steyr 91 and 142 PS ( 104 kW) powered WD-612. The design speed is 80 km / h and the range is around 450 km. In total, the two-axle version can be loaded with up to 4,500 kg, the maximum permissible total weight is 10,100 kg. The three-axle version 680M3 with the largely identical engine provides 110 kW (150 hp) through turbocharging or 125 kW (170 hp) with the engines of the WD612 series. The payload is 5.5 tons and the maximum permissible total weight is 12 tons. The five-speed transmission of the 680ers is not synchronized , so it must with intermediate gas are switched and double domes. The switchable front-wheel drive , the reduction gear and the rear axle lock are available as off-road driving devices. In some cases, vehicles were also equipped with a mechanical cable winch . In the 1990s, the Steyr 680M was upgraded. It was equipped with double exterior mirrors, a reinforced platform, new brakes, a new convertible top and the dashboard of the Steyr 12M18 truck .
In contrast to other forward control trucks, the Steyr 680 does not have a folding driver's cab, so the engine is serviced via a 50 × 100 cm cover attached in the cockpit between the driver and front passenger, or the entire engine mounted on carrier rails can pass through the grille can be pulled out. The comparatively high purchase price and the relatively low payload prevented the Steyr 680 from being successful in the civilian sector, although many different versions and superstructures from semi-trailers to furniture transporters were offered.
user
Because of its off-road capability and robustness, the Steyr 680, together with the Pinzgauer , established the excellent reputation of the Steyr company in the Arab world.
Use in the Austrian Armed Forces
The Steyr Diesel 680M (in Bundesheer jargon 680er-Diesel ) truck has been the backbone of passenger and material transport in the Austrian armed forces since the late 1960s . Its reliability and robustness stood out in particular. Its main use is the transportation of supplies and personnel. It offers space for one driver and 19 passengers. In addition to the vehicles for personnel transport, there are also vehicles that are equipped with a tail lift for material transport, as well as the driving school vehicles equipped with a double cab. The three-axle version was used especially for pulling larger towed loads (field howitzers, field kitchen etc.). In addition to the flatbed truck for goods and crew transport or as a transporter for (radio, workshop) shelters, the Steyr 680 M3 was also built as a tipper (5 or 3 tons), tanker and fire engine .
Due to their age, the 680s were completely retired by early 2007. In easy terrain, they were replaced by the Steyr 12M18 and MAN-TGM 12.240 / 4 × 4 models , while Unimog U4000 vehicles are used as replacement in difficult terrain .
Originally, the successor 12M18 was supposed to replace the already outdated Steyr 680M at the Austrian Armed Forces, but enough vehicles were never purchased, which is why many 680Ms were still used for personnel and material transport up to 2007. The Steyr 680M is currently being replaced by Unimog vehicles. There were over 3700 vehicles of the type 680M in several different versions in use by the Austrian Armed Forces, which were also used for missions abroad.
Use in the Swiss Army
The Swiss Army procured the A680M as the Steyr A 680 g for various purposes with different wheelbases . The Swiss variants did not use turbocharged engines .
