The Steyr A 680 g is an all-terrain truck of the Steyr brand and a Swiss variant of the Steyr 680M that was used in the Swiss Army . It differs from it by a different wheelbase (the A 680 g with 3200 mm and the A 680 gl with 3700 instead of 3300 mm in the Austrian 680M) and Trilex rims , which allow you to use only tire levers, jacks and a Repairing a wheel cross on a tire or changing the casing and tube.

In 1969 the Swiss Army procured 405 of these vehicles, which were used as bridge wagons with a convertible top, as bridge wagons with a special body and single-axle trailers for the transport of pioneer bridges and as workshop vehicles with box bodies.

technology

The payload of the flatbed truck is 3 tons. Almost all A 680 g received an aluminum structure for the spare wheel and the tool cabinet; it is even present in the flatbed version . The vehicles were often equipped with a box body from Hess . The design-related top speed is 80 km / h and the range with the standard 120-liter tank is around 450 km. Approx. 22 l / 100 km of fuel are used on a flat road when driving quickly. In some cases, vehicles were also equipped with a mechanical cable winch .

Chassis and suspension

The vehicle is built on a ladder frame and equipped with two driven rigid axles. They are each suspended from longitudinally arranged semi-elliptic leaf spring pairs. The front axle has hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers . The A 680 g has drum brakes all around , a hydraulic dual-circuit brake system with compressed air assistance on all wheels as well as a compressed air-assisted parking brake by means of a cable pull on the rear wheels and a mechanically operated exhaust pressure brake.

engine

The engines of the series WD-609 (with pre-chamber injection ) and WD-610 ( direct injection ) produce 88 kW (120 HP) at 2800 rpm. These are liquid-cooled , six-cylinder , four - stroke diesel engines with two valves per cylinder, which are operated by a side camshaft via tappets , bumpers and rocker arms . A cylinder bore of 105 mm and a piston stroke of 115 mm results in a displacement of 5976 cm³. The engines were initially delivered with a compression of 17.5: 1 and later 17.0: 1. Depending on the version, the maximum torque is 360  Nm at 1600 rpm or 380 Nm at 1600 rpm.

There is no turbocharger like the Austrian models.

In contrast to many other vehicles, the dynamic pressure brake, in the form of a throttle valve arranged after the exhaust manifold , can be adjusted sensitively using a lever, so that in difficult driving situations, for example on snow on a downhill gradient, the correct braking can be set without jerking it trigger. With the hand throttle, not only can the idle speed be controlled, but the power can also be regulated sensitively up to full load, so that you can take your foot off the accelerator when driving on the motorway or set a certain constant power in special driving conditions.

drive

The mechanical five-speed gearbox with stick shift is unsynchronized and positively locked. The mechanical reduction and transfer case has two gear stages and is synchronized for on-road and off-road gear . There is a power take-off for the cable winch. The vehicle has a gearshift lever for the gearbox, for on-road or off-road driving and for the cable winch. The rear axle lock and the front wheel drive can be switched on pneumatically and are operated with their own pull switches, the latter being automatically engaged when switching to off-road driving.

These off-road vehicles are available from around 4 bar compressed air system pressure.

The single-disc dry clutch with torsion damper F&S G 310 K is operated hydraulically.

Electrics

The electrical 24-volt system is fed by two 12-volt batteries of 125 Ah each, which are housed under the passenger seat.
