Steyr 12M18

The Steyr 12M18 is an all-terrain truck from the former Austrian vehicle manufacturer Steyr , which was originally developed for the Austrian Armed Forces .

technology

The vehicle has permanent all-wheel drive , with limited slip differentials on both axles and a longitudinal lock that can be activated in difficult terrain. The power is transmitted by a nine-speed gearbox (one gear designed as a crawler) with an off-road reduction. The six-cylinder engine of the WD 612 series with direct injection has a maximum output of 130 kW and develops a maximum torque of 630 Nm at 1200 rpm. This engine series was designed according to the HPCE ( High Performance Controlled Emission ) process. The vehicle reaches a top speed of 98 km / h; the range is about 700 km. The cab was designed by the French industrial designer Louis Lucien Lepoix , who had previously designed cabs for manufacturers such as Henschel , Magirus-Deutz and Büssing .

use

The Steyr 12M18 is mainly used by the Austrian Armed Forces for personnel transport and is gradually replacing the Steyr 680M . Originally, up to 18 people including their personal combat equipment could be transported on the loading area, but due to new safety regulations of the Austrian Armed Forces, it is now more permitted to transport up to 16 people on the loading area. In addition to vehicles for personnel transport, there are also vehicles that are equipped with a tail lift for material transport. The Steyr 12M18 is also used by the armies of Greece (as Steyr 14M14), Thailand and the USA (as FMTV).

From 1988 Steyr took part in the tender of the United States Army for the new FMTV ( Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles ) with 4 × 4 drive and a payload of 2.5 t and 6 × 6 drive and a payload of 5 t . With the help of Stewart & Stevenson in Houston , Steyr introduced the 12M18 concept and received an order for 17 prototypes that were built at Steyr. After nine months of testing, the Steyr concept was awarded the contract. More than 60,000 trucks were ordered, they were built by various US companies according to the Steyr concept. Series production for the US Army began in 1995 and from 1996 the FMTV vehicles were introduced into the US Army. The vehicles were intended to replace the obsolete GMC vehicles. After Stewart & Stevenson was taken over by Armor Holdings in 2006 and this in turn by BAE Systems in 2007 , the vehicles were manufactured by BAE Systems Land & Armaments.

Since 2013, the German vehicle manufacturer Excap , based in the Hessian Lautertal, has been buying discarded models of the Steyr 12M18 and converting them completely into expedition vehicles .
