Lists on the subject

The Steyr ACR ( A dvanced C ombat R IFLE) was an Austrian assault rifle of Steyr Mannlicher . It was developed in the 1980s on the basis of the Steyr AUG at the request of the US Army as part of the Special Purpose Individual Weapon program. It was designed for use with Flechette ammunition.

Overview

The ACR was designed in a bullpup design , which means that the magazine is located on the buttstock of the weapon. A telescopic sight with 1 x magnification is attached to the mounting rail as standard .

The weapon does not use a shutter for ammunition feed . Instead, the chamber is movably mounted and moves vertically downwards after firing. There, a spring pushes a new cartridge out of the magazine from the rear into the bearing, this pushes the empty case forward and the case is ejected downwards through an opening. This downward ejection avoids a typical disadvantage of the bullpup design, that when the weapon is fired from the left shoulder, the cases, which are usually ejected to the right, hit a shooter in the face.

ammunition

The ammunition consists of a flechette in a subdivided into four segments sabot . The cartridge case itself consists of a lightweight, semi-transparent plastic instead of conventional brass, which has reduced the weight to half of a 5.56 × 45 mm NATO projectile. With a cartridge weight of 5.1  g , the bullet weighs only 0.66 g.

The muzzle velocity is around 1500 m / s, at 600 m the Flechette can still penetrate 35 mm of steel.
