The Stieglers Gorge is a gorge in the Selous Wildlife Sanctuary in Tanzania ( East Africa ). It is about a hundred meters deep and eight kilometers long. The Rufiji flows through it in numerous rapids shortly before its confluence with the Beho-Beho .

On the southern edge of the gorge there used to be a lodge , but it was abandoned in the 1980s. The lower entrance of the gorge can be reached by motor boats on the river. There are no longer any driveways, and the spectacular cable car, with which even cars could be transported through the air on a kind of pontoon over the gorge (shown on numerous photos in old travel guides), was made unusable after the lodge was closed. From 1954 to 1978, the only hydrological measuring station of the river was located near the former lodge . The gorge was named after a Swiss big game hunter who was trampled to death by an elephant here in 1907 (according to other information: fell into the gorge and died in the process).
