The Areopagos Foundation ( nor .: Stiftelsen Areopagos , also just: Areopagos ) is a Norwegian - Danish organization in the Lutheran tradition. It emerged from the Norwegian Buddhist mission and was called Den nordisk kristne buddhistmisjon (Nordic Christian Buddhist Mission) until 2000 . The current name takes up the story of Paul's sermon on the Areopagus in Athens ( Acts 17 : 16–32  LUT ).

history

The organization was founded by Karl Ludvig Reichelt , who, together with Notto Normann Thelle, founded a guest house for wandering Buddhist and Daoist monks in Nanjing in 1922 . He assumed that the Christian faith could fulfill the longing of many Buddhists. The Nordisk Kristne Buddhistmisjon was originally part of the Norske misjonsselskap . However, when there were conflicts between liberal and conservative theologians in the 1920s, Reichelt decided in 1926 to set up his own organization. During the unrest of the 1930s, Reichelt had to flee from Nanjing to Hong Kong , where he founded the Christian center Taofong Shan , literally: the place where the "wind of the (Christian) Dao blows".

Areopagos aims to share the gospel in a multi-religious world. The foundation focuses on the development of religious studies, interreligious dialogue, and Christian faith practice.

Areopagos is a foundation based in Oslo and also has member associations in Norway and Denmark.

In Norway, Areopagos heads the church dialogue centers in Oslo , Bergen and Stavanger .
