The collegiate church

The collegiate church of Saints Candidus and Korbinian is a church in Innichen in South Tyrol. The church is a three-aisled basilica with a crossing dome and three apses . It is considered to be the most important sacred building in Romanesque style in the Eastern Alps.

history

The church was built with the assistance of a Lombard architect in the 13th century on the spot where Duke Tassilo III. the Benedictine monastery of St. Candidus was built. Around 1143 the church was rebuilt due to the conversion of the abbey into a collegiate monastery , the Innichen Abbey . An extension took place around 1250. The vestibule dates from around 1415. The two-story vestibule and the Dorotheenkapelle were built in 1468. The Helper Chapel is located on the northern side of the atrium and was donated by Canon Georg Geisser in 1524 .

crypt

The crypt

There is a three-aisled crypt under the altar . The hall has a cross vault . Until 1969 the crypt contained relics from the two pen cartridges. A baptismal font has also been located in the crypt since 1970. The crypt was restored between 1967 and 1970, as it had undergone radical changes in the Baroque, Neo-Gothic and Neo-Romanesque styles over the years. As a result of the restoration, the room got its Romanesque room proportions from the 13th century. In the crypt there is a Romanesque wooden sculpture of St. Candidus on a pedestal.

art

Late Romanesque dome frescoes from around 1280 can be seen in the church; they show the biblical story of creation. A large crucifixion group from around 1250 hangs in the chancel. There is also a statue of the patron saint St. Candidus around 1250 in the church. Remains of a baroque altar from the 17th century have been preserved. The organ has a carved case from the 17th century. The south portal contains Romanesque stone reliefs and late Gothic portraits of the church patrons Candidus and Korbinian . The painting above the north portal was created by Alfons Siber around 1909 .
