The Stiftsplatz is a central square in the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Kaiserslautern .

location

The Stiftsplatz is one of the central squares in the city center of Kaiserslautern. Spittelstrasse and Fischerstrasse border the square in the north, Stiftsplatz in the east and Rummelstrasse in the south.

Development

The square is framed by buildings in the north, south and west. In the south there is the building complex of the former Wertheim department store (today a small-scale retail), in the south-west the collegiate church , in the west the multi-storey building of Deutsche Bank , in the north a design hotel, in the east the main office of the Stadtsparkasse Kaiserslautern . The square is planted with trees in a row in the west and east. In the west in front of the bank building between the trees there is a small fountain, in the northwest the Spittelbrunnen. There is an underground car park under the square.

The square was lavishly paved in 2000 with gray granite stones imported from China and a hotel was to be built at the north end. However, the shell remained unfinished because the floor heights of 2.50 m iL only comply with the building regulations (= minimum height 2.40 m) plus footfall and airborne noise protection (for hotels), as well as for air-conditioning suspensions in the remaining 10 cm Very high additional financial expenses had to be realized and so the investor filed for bankruptcy as a precaution . In 2006 it went into the foreclosure auction , but since nobody wanted the built-in rabbit box , people thought aloud about demolishing it. The Kaiserslautern entrepreneur Hans Sachs only acquired the property in 2009, began with the interior work and opened the hotel in 2011.

history

Markets have been held around the collegiate church for several hundred years. In 1850 the Kaiserslautern city council decided to build a central square in the immediate vicinity of the church in order to offer enough space for the weekly markets.

use

The square was often used for major events (open-air concerts, public viewing, etc.). Due to the hotel building, such use is only permitted very restrictively today. There is a market day in the square on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
