Gottesbuden Foundation

The Gottesbuden Foundation , also known as the Gottesbuden Senator Heinrich Köpken Foundation , is the second oldest of the 336 foundations (as of the end of 2018) in Bremen . It is based at Friesenstrasse 48.

history

The foundation was created on the basis of the will of the citizen Johann Using , drawn up on March 2, 1564 , which provided for the foundation of the foundation after his death and the accommodation of 17 poor people. In 1566, his widow left three stalls at the wooden gate (on Stavendamm) in Schnoor for twelve arms. The resulting foundation was given the name of her second husband Hinrich Köpken in 1608 at the latest, who took over the management of the foundation in 1584, and added the name “Stiftung Gottesbuden”.

God's booths were small, often leaning against larger houses, which offered the poor a roof over their heads free of charge. Similar booths were built in the parish of St. Stephani at the west end of the old town by 1650 at the latest ; there they were called St. Stephani Widows House. The management was in the hands of Bremen senators for around 400 years .

Since 1668 only old, impoverished women have been accepted into the houses. In 1735, the statutes stipulated that the woman in question had to be of “reformed religion”, of good repute and way of life, and healthy so that she could not “be a burden to those who lived with her”. The Schnoor, in which the stalls were located, was repeatedly hit by floods, so that the foundation sold the stalls in 1836.

In 1837 or 1838, a building at Köpkenstrasse 5 east of the old town was erected in place of the three stalls with funds from the foundation. The women were entitled to free accommodation and received financial support. This was true until after the First World War . The inscription of the previous booths, "H HINRICH KOEPKEN VND SINER ERVEN DISSE DREI GADES BOEDEN, Renovatum 1804" was attached to the new accommodation. Until the time after the First World War, the women received free living (lodging) heating material, light, water and a little money, plus gifts at Easter , at the time of the Bremen Freimarkt and at Christmas . In 1924 this regulation was lifted and adapted to that of the Bremen widow houses. From then on, a one-time entry fee of 300 marks was charged, plus 3 marks per month.

On January 8, 1830, the foundation was given full rights by resolution of the Senate. It was not until 1954 that it received its own statute in which the current spelling of the name Heinrich Köpken appears for the first time.

After a change in the statutes and renovation of the house, predominantly female students from the Hochschule für Künste have been living there since the 1980s at affordable rents, even if the foundation has generally referred to young women who are in training since 1987.

The foundation is managed by a three-person board. From 1954 to 2006, this board included Karl-Joachim Quantmeyer, President of the Bremen State Audit Office . Paul Thomas Koßmann sits on the board as the foundation's accountant.
