history
In a government declaration on October 13, 1982, the then Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl proposed building up a collection on German history since 1945. An expert opinion prepared in 1983 by a commission of experts was presented to the German Bundestag in July 1984 after a broad social discussion. In 1986 a dependent foundation was established, which was converted into an independent foundation in 1990. A construction staff had been working on the preparation of a permanent exhibition since 1986. At the same time, a separate collection of historical objects was created.
Construction of the House of History in Bonn began in September 1989. In 1994, Chancellor Helmut Kohl opened the house and permanent exhibition. In 2001 and 2011 the permanent exhibition was comprehensively updated.
On the recommendation of the Independent Federalism Commission to the German Bundestag, the Foundation for the House of History of the Federal Republic of Germany was commissioned in 1992 to set up an “Archive of German Unity” in Leipzig. The exhibition, documentation and information center for contemporary history forum Leipzig was built there . It was opened by Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder on October 9, 1999, the 10th anniversary of the Leipzig demonstration . The focus of the 2000 m² permanent exhibition is on resistance and dictatorship in the Soviet occupation zone and the GDR .
Since 2005, when it took over the Industrial Design Collection , the foundation has also had a location in Berlin. The collection holds an inventory of everyday objects from the GDR and found its place in the Kulturbrauerei. On November 15, 2013, the new permanent exhibition "Everyday Life in the GDR" was opened in the museum in the Kulturbrauerei . In 2011 the Tränenpalast , a former exit hall of the Friedrichstrasse railway station border crossing point , was incorporated into the foundation and the permanent exhibition “Border experiences. Everyday life in the division of Germany ”.
