history

The following project phases had taken place before the museum opened:

On July 1, 2005, the House of History Foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany took over the Industrial Design Collection . The examination of the existing condition (end of 2005 / beginning of 2006) revealed significant conservation deficiencies in the storage of the holdings and resulted in the move (April to July 2007) to a new depot in Berlin-Spandau .

Then the collection and initial inventories began.

In October 2007, the Penti II camera, the first object from the Industrial Design collection, was placed in the online database “Search in the collections”. As of April 2015, more than 1200 objects from the Industrial Design Collection can be viewed online under the code “SIG”.

On July 29, 2011, the rental contract for the museum in the Kulturbrauerei was signed between TLG Immobilien GmbH and the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks . Extensive renovation work on the listed building then began. In spring 2012, the concept of the new permanent exhibition was presented and discussed in the committees of the House of History Foundation. On November 15, 2013, the new permanent exhibition "Everyday Life in the GDR" was opened in the museum in the Kulturbrauerei.

location

The museum in the Kulturbrauerei is housed in a former brewery on Prenzlauer Berg , the cornerstone of which was laid in 1842. After the Second World War, the SED regime converted the brewery into a state-owned company (VEB), which was closed in 1967 due to ailing machines. Then the buildings were used in various ways, e.g. B. through a furniture wholesale market and the legendary "Frannz Club". In 1991, after the reunification, the Kulturbrauerei was founded, which is a multicultural center u. a. has developed into one of the largest cultural institutions in Berlin with theaters, cinemas, restaurants and event rooms. The museum in the Kulturbrauerei can be found there at Knaackstraße 97.

Permanent exhibition

On 600 square meters, the tension between the ideological demands of the SED rule and East German everyday reality is illuminated. Around 800 original objects, more than 200 documents, film and sound recordings as well as biographical reports form the basis for the exhibition, which is divided into four main themes.

In the first subject area, the fundamental shaping of everyday life by the framework conditions of the SED state is presented. The regime propagated the Soviet Union as a political and practical model and ideologically invoked Marxism-Leninism . Few supported the SED, the majority conformed, resistance and “thinking differently” were punished with surveillance and persecution.

Then the visitor's attention is drawn to life in the collective. For the working people, but also in their free time, mass organizations and work collectives set the pace in everyday life. Through leisure and cultural programs, they created a feeling of togetherness and cohesion, but at the same time also served as social control.

The third subject area illustrates the stark contrast between the SED's promise of a better life under socialism and the actual supply situation. The socialist centrally planned economy could not ensure the supply of attractive living space, high-quality consumer goods and food. Inadequate infrastructure and a destroyed environment made living conditions difficult. In addition, the exhibition also presents examples of people who opposed the shortage economy through private initiative and creativity.

A Trabi with a roof tent and the dacha are in the fourth exhibition area as examples of the retreat of many East Germans into private life in order to escape political and social control. However, the lack of freedom and self-determination could not be suppressed by these small escapes in everyday life.

The foundation has been offering a free audio guide for the exhibition since 2015, which is also made available as an app. The audio guide is available in German, English, French, Italian and Spanish.
