biography

Biskup was interested in people and politics, especially in Eastern Europe . The reason: his mother came from Danzig , the father from Silesia . As a child, Biskup also attended fashion shows with his grandmother and collected old issues of German Vogue . At the age of 15, however, he began a three-year training as a postman in Bad Godesberg . During his apprenticeship, he founded a trade union newspaper and began to photograph current events in Bonn. Peace demonstrations and occupied houses were his first motives. At 18 Biskup went to Augsburg , made at Bayern Kolleg 1981-1985 his High School and studied at the University of Augsburg "New Age", "political science" and "folklore".

Career

First professional photographs

In 1982 Biskup's first picture appeared on the front page of the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung, for which he worked as a freelance photojournalist until 1990. Biskup traveled to the Soviet Union for the first time in 1988 on a study trip . There he wanted to get an idea of Mikhail Sergejewitsch Gorbachev's perestroika and glasnost policies. When Hungary opened the border to the west in September 1989, GDR refugees streamed from Budapest to Berlin . Biskup, then 26 years old, documented her journey with the camera.

Documentation of the upheaval in Eastern Europe

Biskup photographed the upheaval in the GDR up to the reunification on October 3, 1990 and later turned the camera on the events in the USSR and Yugoslavia . When the Soviet Union was officially dissolved on December 26, 1991 , Biskup also documented this change. He was there during the 1991 coup against Boris Yeltsin and Mikhail Gorbachev . In the years to come, Biskup traveled to Russia again and again . In 2000 he became the first German photographer to portray Russian President Vladimir Putin . Since then , Biskup has visited Russia and especially St. Petersburg more than 50 times .

Contact Kai Diekmann

In 1999, Biskup met Kai Diekmann , who was then editor-in-chief of Welt am Sonntag and, from 2000, at the BILD newspaper . He became aware of the photographer through a picture in the taz . Diekmann contacted Biskup and promoted him from then on. Since then, Biskup has photographed the freedom struggles in Ukraine and many interviews with politicians such as Theresa May for the Bild newspaper . Today Diekmann and Biskup are good friends. The Bild-Zeitung later referred to Biskup as the "eye of German unity".

Chancellor photographer

Biskup became even better known in 2011. The exhibition “About Life” in the German Historical Museum in Berlin showed 280 photographs of him and Thomas Hoepker on the upheaval in the former Eastern Bloc countries. Chancellor Angela Merkel gave the opening speech . She photographed Biskup for the first time in 1990 and has continued to do so since then. It was not Biskup's only encounter with a German chancellor: since 1998 he has accompanied Helmut Kohl as a photographer on private and official occasions.

Photographs of politicians and celebrities

In addition to Helmut Kohl and Vladimir Putin, Biskup photographed many other celebrities, including Donald Trump , Emmanuel Macron , Karl Lagerfeld , Katy Perry , Barack Obama and also of Chancellor Angela Merkel, Biskup already has hundreds of photographs in his collection.

Daniel Biskup's photographs are in both private and public collections. Some of the photographs are shown in the online gallery Salt and Silver, the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the German Historical Museum in Berlin and the House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn.
