Gerlacianum Scholarship Foundation

The more than 400 years old Foundation Gerlacianum is an East Frisian legacy based on the will of Sibrandus Gerlacchius from Grimersum , East Frisia .

Two days before his death on January 22nd, 1600 - at the age of 32 - Gerlacchius ordered the descendants of the paternal and maternal families who wanted to study on a scholarship before witnesses in the house of the then mayor Luppe Sicken of the city of Emden to promote.

"Ultimately, however, I set, want and decree, by virtue of this knowingly, that one should and want to receive from fatherly slaughter of my poor dear parents for study, one or two students, so enjoy and be comfortable with the study, from subsequent legacies and goods , if I give Eternal and Hereditary to the entertainment of this or the same from the following country to live income, pensions or interest for tax ... "

The will also gives an answer to the possibility that no descendants study:

“And where no one apart from the sexes refuses to negotiate, it should be given to a stranger who desires it for the maintenance of the study. In the case it is none of the obged. Paternal and maternal tribe or some foreign qualified person could or might be present for study, as if I wanted and order that everything should be annually applied to the pension and the pension should again be put on pension and proliferate, a comfortable person bit to study for so long would have been invented, but that from the obged. Sexes should and should be the first to have the arrogance at all times who has to use such a stipulated scholarship every year to control his studies. "

Sibrandus Gerlacchius also considered the necessary succession of the will administrators appointed by him. So it says:

“... after their death, however, other parents of the parents should always and at all times from the paternal and maternal sexes to succeed to the curator or executor creating an assigned scholarship and to execute this my last will regarding the student entertainment arrangement and to hold hands over it. .. "

His will for the promotion of students has since been fulfilled by the Foundation's Board of Trustees.

The foundation's assets mainly consist of land in East Frisia , including real estate that was originally donated. More recently, the foundation's assets have also been supplemented by various endowments, which were made primarily by former scholarship holders or friends of the foundation connected to them.
