The heureka foundation is a non-profit foundation promoting the environmentally friendly development of transport. The purpose of the foundation according to the statutes is to promote the development, application and implementation of decision-making and optimization methods in the transport sector.
founding
The foundation goes back to the work of the working group "Decision-making and optimization methods" founded in 1975 within the working committee "Theoretical Basics of Road Traffic" of the Research Society for Roads and Transport ( FGSV ). After the publication of a research report on decision-making and optimization methods in traffic in Karlsruhe in 1983, with the participation of the Association of Public Transport Companies (VDV), this working group organized the "Heureka'83 Optimization in Traffic and Transport" , a lecture event with a presentation of hardware and software. Since this "1. Heureka ”nine other events were held. The Heureka has become an important lecture event on the theoretical and practical fundamentals of traffic, especially decision-making and optimization methods, in Germany. It was carried out in 1983, 1987, 1990, 1993 and 1996 under the scientific direction of Hartmut Keller, in 1999, 2002 and 2005 by Manfred Bolze in Karlsruhe and in 2008, 2011 and 2014 by Markus Friedrich in Stuttgart.
The foundation was approved as a non-profit organization in 1995. Hans Martin Heck was the first chairman of the board and Manfred Garben has been the first chairman since 2005. The name of the foundation and the lecture event refers to a class of mathematical optimization methods, the heuristic methods , which also play a role in transportation.
Advancement Award for Young Scientists and Life Time Award
The foundation awards two prizes, since 1996 the advancement award endowed with 5,000 euros and since 2002 the Lifetime Award

Lecture events and projects
Preferred partners for the foundation's lecture events are the FGSV, the German Association of Cities and the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) in Bergisch Gladbach.
The foundation supervises and promotes fundamental research projects that deal with the systematics and application of decision-making and optimization methods in the transport sector or that make a contribution to ensuring sustainable mobility. One example is the Optiv research project, which was funded by the BMWI.
