General

The building complex is known as the Glockenhof or Gloggi . Neighboring buildings include the newer St. Anna Chapel of the Evangelical Society of Zurich . Before the building complex was built, the area was called St. Anna's area. Many clubs also meet in the rented rooms of the Glockenhof. The Gloggi- Pfadi is also located at the Cevi Center in the same entrance .

The house has been a listed building since 2010. The aim is to cover the costs for the Cevi center with the income from the hotel operations. The Hotel Glockenhof is independent and works with all common booking platforms worldwide.

history

The Glockenhof takes its name from the Füssli bell foundry , which stood here for several centuries. The St. Stephen's Chapel, whose origins go back to the 4th century and was probably the first parish church in Zurich, was located in the same location. It was canceled in 1528.

The historic St. Anna Chapel from 1387 stood at today's St. Annahof department store on the corner of Bahnhofstrasse and Füsslistrasse. This housed the Catholic community from 1807 to 1844, the Evangelical Society of Zurich from 1847 to 1860 , the Anglican community until 1895 and the Lutheran community until 1912. Then the modern department store was built. A second St. Anna chapel was built on St. Annagasse as early as 1863. With the construction of the Glockenhof in 1911, the St. Anna Chapel became part of the same building complex as the building of the Zurich Free Gymnasium , which later moved out .

The Glockenhof building was created to meet the space requirements of the YMCA Zurich 1, founded in 1887. A forerunner of the YMCA Zurich was the Christian Youth Association, which was merged into the YMCA Zurich in 1900. The YMCA like the Evangelical Society of Zurich and others opposed the movement critical of the Bible in the Reformed regional church. Henri Dunant founded Switzerland 's first cevi in Geneva in 1852 . Dunant helped found the YMCA World Federation. This is based in Geneva.

The Glockenhof was founded as a cooperative in 1908 when the building complex was being planned. In 1976 it was decided to convert the cooperative into a foundation in order to preserve the Glockenhof in the long term.
