history

As early as 1850, a so-called youth club was founded in Zurich under the presidency of David Kölliker. In it young men came together with the aim of strengthening one another in faith. Influenced by the founding of the YMCA in London by George Williams , the desire for a stronger missionary effect soon arose in other large cities as well. The work should go far beyond that of the youth clubs and a YMCA based on the model of the international YMCA should also be founded in Zurich.

Concrete steps were taken when the US Postal Minister, John Wanamaker , offered the Swiss representative on the YMCA World Committee, Hermann Eidenbenz, an offer in 1884 to finance a secretary for two years if an association was to be founded. As a result, Hermann Eidenbenz first founded the Association of Christian Merchants in 1886. A year later, an attempt was made to bring together the youth associations and the association of Christian merchants under the umbrella of a YMCA. However, the youth clubs feared for their independence.

Independently of these, the YMCA Zurich was founded in March 1887 as the first YMCA in German-speaking Switzerland and Pastor Edmund Fröhlich was elected its chairman. Ernst Hofer became the first secretary. At the end of the first year of the association, the YMCA Zurich had 381 young people as members. In addition to weekly Bible studies, there was a focus on educational work among young people. There were various language courses, courses in accounting and shorthand. In 1890 the association moved into its own house at Glärnischstrasse 22. From 1892 there was a separate monthly sheet.

In 1900 the club house was sold and the Augustinerhof was rented. Now there was also a merger of the YMCA Zurich with the youth clubs Augustinerhof and Unterstrass . In 1909 the Restiberg holiday home was acquired and operated until 1955. In 1911 the company was able to move into its own new Glockenhof building at Sihlstrasse 33. This is where the association is based to this day.

In 1912 the scout department of the YMCA was founded. During the war years of the First World War , one played an important role in the care of soldiers. In 1929 the Greifensee holiday home added to the association's properties.

Much restructuring in the work of the YMCA has taken place over the years. 1962 was the first time offers for girls and young women, a change in the articles of association allows women since 1976, the membership and the club was called henceforth Christian Association of young men and women YMCA / F .

In 1998, the YMCA National Association , the YMCA National Association , the German-speaking Cevi Association, the FRUC and the Union Chrétienne Féminine Vaudoises (UCF Vaud) merged to form Cevi Switzerland . It was only at this point that the name Cevi , which had been in common use for a long time, was adopted for the whole of Switzerland and became the name of the association, which is still officially known as the Swiss Association of Christian Associations of Young Women and Men . In 2012 the Cevi Zurich can celebrate its 125th anniversary.

structure

Several branch associations arose early on in Turbenthal , about 30 km away, each of which worked independently. It was not until 1948 that the individual branches merged to form the city association in order to be able to work more closely together. The Cevi Zürich 1 also existed in the Glockenhof . In 1998 the city association and Cevi Zurich 1 finally merged to form Cevi Zurich . Since then, members from all branch clubs have been represented in the annual general assembly as the highest decision-making body. The Central Board is elected from this group for four years. The latter in turn convenes an advisory board, which is at his side in an advisory capacity on important matters. The central board is responsible for the strategic management within the meaning of the association's statutes and employs a management team that operates a permanent office in the Glockenhof together with other employees.

tasks

The association wants to «give children, young people and adults the opportunity to meet one another and to come closer to the Christian faith. The Cevi Zurich supports, deepens and expands the Cevi offer in Zurich and the surrounding area. " This goal is currently to be achieved with offers such as a sports group, regular lunch, child care and many others. In addition, the Cevi Zurich maintains a close partnership with the YMCA Spitak in Armenia and offers winter storage every year. In addition, many administrative tasks are the responsibility of the Cevi Zurich . The Glockenhof scout corps is entrusted with scout work in the city as an independent department . The other associations belonging to the Cevi Zurich operate a wide range of work in their respective quarters with many different weekly groups and circles for children and young people as well as annual camps.

Clubhouse

The club house is the Glockenhof at Sihlstrasse 33. With this new building in 1911, the aim was to create enough space for the various offers of the YMCA Zurich. In order to put the work of the association on a stable financial basis, one not only built premises for one's own work. In addition to letting the rooms and halls in the club house to third parties, a hotel was integrated into the building complex, which still exists today as the Hotel Glockenhof. Since 1976, the management of the building has no longer been the responsibility of a cooperative , but rather the Glockenhaus foundation that was established at the time . The Cevi Regionalverband Zürich Schaffhausen Glarus is also based in the Glockenhof.
