Style flaw

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A stylistic error is understood to be a linguistic error of expression which - with correct grammar  - arises from an unfortunate choice or combination of words or metaphors and thus either creates a pleonasm or a linguistic or factual inconsistency. If the mistake seems involuntarily funny, one speaks of a style bloom , if it looks stilted or pretentious, also of mannerism .

While spelling errors violate the orthography , and grammatical and syntax errors violate the structural rules of the language, stylistic errors reduce the linguistic elegance .

Examples:

  • "The ravages of time, which has already dried many a tear, will also cause grass to grow over this wound." (Inconsistency in the images)
  • "The mistake will cost him his head and his life." (Misused phrase; correct: "head and collar")
  • "Since August 1st he has taken over the management of the department." (Incorrect redundancy; correct: "On August 1st ...")
  • "I see myself forced to cancel it." ( Pleonasm )
  • "The hunter went into the forest to shoot hares and met the teacher there." (Misleading association)
