details

Aft of a B-170 ship

The B-170 series was built for various German and foreign shipping companies from the 1990s to 2008. The ship's design goes back in several development steps to the type RW 49 container ship built at Rickmers Werft from the mid-1980s . In the years of production, the type has been developed several times and modernized in detail. Initially presented by the Stocznia Szczecińska shipyard in Stettin, the type remained in the program of the successor company Stocznia Szczecińska Nova after its bankruptcy in 2002 to 2009.

The ships are designed as multi-purpose dry cargo ships with a deckhouse far aft. They are mainly used in container transport. The container capacity is 1730 TEU, with homogeneously loaded 14-ton containers it is still 1107 TEU. The ships have four holds closed with McGregor pontoon hatches , the specialty of which is the possibility of stowing 40-foot containers over general or bulk cargoes. The ships have three ship cranes arranged amidships with a lifting capacity of 40 tons each.

The ships are powered by a two-stroke diesel engine from the manufacturer Cegielski with an output of around 13,200 kW built under a Sulzer license . The motor acts directly on a fixed propeller and enables a speed of almost 20 knots. There are also three auxiliary diesels and an emergency diesel generator available. The berthing and casting off maneuvers are supported by a bow thruster .

A large number of this type of ship was built for the Rickmers shipping company. The ships are often used on liner services in regions with poorly developed port infrastructure; for example, a relatively large number of the ships are on Africa services.
