Stoddard Hill State Park is a state park in the US state of Connecticut in the municipality of Ledyard , on the estuary of the Thames River .

geography

The park is approximately 5 mi (8 km) south of Norwich and covers 55 acres (22 hectares) of land. It is divided into 2 areas, of which the larger area to the north is mainly used. There the Billings Avery Brook forms a small harbor that is accessible via a boat ramp. The part of the bank further south is a reserve. The Stoddard Hill at 186 ft (56 m) above sea level was once used Indians as an observation point. There are various climbing routes on the gneiss blocks. A small cemetery where members of the Stoddard family are buried can be found on the site.

history

Originally the land belonged to the Stoddard family. In 1954 it was acquired with funds from the estate of George Dudley Seymour and declared a state park. In the times of tribal wars and the land grabbing of the European settlers, the hill served as an observation point for the local Indians.

free time activities

There are boating and fishing opportunities in the park's estuary. Hiking trails lead to the top of the hill, where there are some climbing routes on the gneiss rocks.
