Stone the Crows (Kralingen, 1970)

Stone the Crows was a British blues rock band that formed in Glasgow in 1969 .

Maggie Bell (vocals) and Leslie Harvey (guitar) were together in a musical group as teenagers. They met again in 1967 when they were both traveling in Germany with a band that was performing in American barracks.

In 1968 Bell and Harvey founded the formation "Power", which was quite successful in Glasgow. Other members were John McGinnis (keyboards) and Jimmy Dewar (bass, vocals).

The manager Mark London became aware of the group. He teamed up with Peter Grant , the manager of Led Zeppelin , and they jointly took over the management of the band in 1969, which changed its name to "Stone the Crows". Colin Allan came on as a drummer.

The new band name came from an exclamation from Peter Grant when he heard the band for the first time. Stone the Crows is a Cockney expression of surprise, in German about who would have thought .

Her first album Stone the Crows in 1970 was a respectable success. After the second album Ode to John Law (1970) there were two line-up changes: Steve Thompson (bass) and Ronnie Leahy (keyboards) came for McGinnis and Dewar.

The third album Teenage Licks (1971) brought the breakthrough. Stone the Crows were among the top acts at rock festivals. Maggie Bell has been compared to Janis Joplin . Then in 1972 Leslie Harvey tragically died while preparing for a performance: he was electrocuted while rehearsing for a performance in Swansea and died on the way to the hospital.

Peter Green tried to replace Harvey, but finally canceled. Steve Howe from Yes stepped in briefly, then Jimmy McCulloch took over the job of guitarist. On the next album Ontinuous Performance (1972) both Harvey and McCulloch can be heard. There are now historical live recordings of Stone the Crows on DVD, as part of a Beatclub Edition that includes all programs. A total of four long pieces of them can be seen in the third part "1970–72".

In 1973, Stone the Crows broke up. McCulloch went to Paul McCartney's Wings , Allen joined Focus (band) . Maggie Bell started a solo career.
