Thomas "Gustl" Ernst (born December 23, 1967 in Wiesbaden ) is a former German soccer player .

Career

Born in Wiesbaden, he learned to play football at FV Biebrich 02 . In 1981 Ernst switched to Eintracht Frankfurt , where his professional career began in 1987. For many years he was the second man between the posts, among others behind Uli Stein . Only after Stein was kicked out in 1994 was Ernst allowed to play four games in a row for Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1993/94 season. After the rise of FSV Frankfurt in 1994, Ernst played one season in the 2nd Bundesliga . After the relegation of the FSV, he moved to VfL Bochum , where he was again number two behind Uwe Gospodarek . Only in the 1998/99 season he was able to play almost a season as a regular goalkeeper. In September 1998 the doping control after the game against Kaiserslautern tested positive because the club doctor had given him a circulatory stabilizing drug with a prohibited substance after a collision. He was acquitted, but Bochum received a fine of 80,000 D-Marks. In 2000 he went to VfB Stuttgart for three years as the second goalkeeper behind Timo Hildebrand . In 2003 he joined 1. FC Kaiserslautern , where he was also the reserve goalkeeper until regular goalkeeper Tim Wiese tore a cruciate ligament in 2004 . Thomas Ernst then stood in the Lauterer goal for the remaining games and proved himself to be a strong goalkeeper. In the 2005/06 season he was surprisingly number two again behind Jürgen Macho at the beginning , but fought his way back on the 11th matchday before he had to give it back to Jürgen Macho on the 14th matchday due to an injury.

After the 2005/06 season, Ernst ended his professional career.

End of career

In the summer of 2006, Ernst looked after the goalkeepers of the German national women's team as a goalkeeper coach on a fee basis.

From July 2007 to June 2008 Thomas Ernst was team manager at the regional league team FSV Frankfurt. He then became a new board member at VfL Bochum on July 1, 2008. He was responsible for sports and media on the board. His contract ran until the end of 2011, but the Supervisory Board separated from him in June 2011. Together with Bernd Reisig , Thomas Ernst has been running a player consultancy agency since his separation from VfL Bochum. He is also involved in a talent development project in China.
