Stora Marøya is an island at the northern end of the Gandsfjord in the Norwegian province of Rogaland . It belongs to the area of the city of Stavanger .
The uninhabited island is about 700 meters east of the Stavanger peninsula. Only about 260 meters further northeast is the somewhat smaller island Litla Marøya . To the north is the small archipelago island of Klovnaskjer , to the south-east is the large island of Uskjo .
Stora Marøya extends in north-south direction over about 530 meters, with a width of up to 300 meters and reaches a maximum height of 30 meters. In the higher areas in the south the island is forested.
In 1999 the island was overgrown with birch and fir trees. Efforts were then made to restore the original character of a landscape characterized by grazing. On April 30, 2015, the Norwegian Minister for Climate and Environment, Tine Sundtoft and Dag Jørund Lønning , Director of the College of Agriculture and Rural Development in Jæren, visited Stora Marøya in this context.
