Stormont County

Stormont County is a historic district in the Canadian province of Ontario . The district was founded in 1792 and later became part of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry United Counties .

After first settlements from 1785, the county was founded in 1792 on an area of ​​1.006 km² in southeastern Ontario on the St. Lawrence River . Some of the first settlers were loyal refugees to the British Crown prior to the American War of Independence . About a third of the pioneers came from the Scottish highlands (see also Highland Clearances ), a third were Germans , and the rest were English , Irish and Scots from the lowlands . In 1800 Russell County was split off.
