Storyville Records (USA)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Storyville Records was an American jazz record label that existed from the 1950s to the mid-1960s.

The jazz label Storyville Records was founded and operated in 1951 by the impresario George Wein ; it developed from the eponymous jazz club Storyville , which Wein had opened the year before. The Storyville catalog mainly contains recordings from the club and also studio recordings, such as 7-inch EPs and albums by Toshiko Akiyoshi , Ruby Braff , Jackie Cain & Roy Kral , Sidney Bechet , Joe Newman , Lee Konitz , Serge Chaloff and Zoot Sims / Bob Brookmeyer ( Tonite's Music Today , 1956). The label was mainly active in the mid-1950s; then George Wein shifted his activities to the organization of the Newport Jazz Festival and other areas. The label has no connection with the Danish label Storyville Records .
