Storyville (Boston)
The Storyville was a jazz club in Boston in the 1950s and 1960s, founded in 1950 by the young pianist (and later impresario of the Newport Jazz Festival ) George Wein ; he was initially in the basement of the Copley Square Hotel in Boston . In 1951 he moved to the Buckminster Hotel on Kenmore Square , but returned around 1953 (this time on the ground floor of the Copley Square Hotel ). In 1959 the club moved to the Bradford Hotel for a year.
history
Nat Hentoff , from whom the club got its name, produced radio programs at Storyville in 1951 . In November 1951, a Roost 10-inch album of the Billy Taylor trio with Charles Mingus was created in Storyville . The radio station WHDH also regularly broadcast jazz concerts from this club from 1952 onwards, which also appeared on Wein's jazz label Storyville . Among others, Edmond Hall , Marian McPartland , Lee Wiley , Sidney Bechet , Stan Getz , Billie Holiday 1951, Chet Baker , Dave Brubeck 1952/1954, Erroll Garner 1952, Jo Jones 1953, Lester Young , Lee Konitz , Chet Baker 1954, Gerry Mulligan in 1956 and Dakota Staton in 1961; Rollins Griffith played in the house band from 1953 with Champ Jones and Alan Dawson . In 1953 Charlie Parker had two appearances here in March and September with different formations, which were documented on the 1985 Blue Note album Charlie Parker at Storyville . The jazz club was later on Cape Cod until George Wein closed it in the early 1960s when he relocated to New York City .
