Charlie Parker at Storyville is a jazz album by Charlie Parker , recorded during two appearances of the Parker quintet at the Storyville Jazz Club in Boston in March and on September 22, 1953. The live recordings were released in 1985 on the revived Blue Note Records label.

The album

Saxophonist Charlie Parker appeared on the WHDH radio station's Saturday night program The Top Shelf in Boston in 1953 . The guest appearance was broadcast from the Storyville Club; its founder George Wein had signed a contract with John McLellan and WHDH for a series of jazz concerts in 1952. In March 1953, Parker came to town as a soloist and was accompanied for his first Storyville appearance by the (relatively unknown) local bassist Billy Griggs, drummer Roy Haynes and, for the first time, Red Garland . It was the only meeting of the two musicians documented with sound recordings, two years before Garland was supposed to play in the Miles Davis band. His style of play is more oriented towards Bud Powell than it was his later game. Charlie Parker played his classics "Moose the Mooche", " Ornithology " and the jazz standard "Out of Nowhere". Bird had not yet recorded the Jule-Styne / Sammy-Cahn track “I'll Walk Alone”. At the end of “Out of Nowhere” John McLellan ended the radio program with his announcement.

Six months later, Parker came back to the Storyville Club in Boston , this time with a completely different band; Bassist Jimmy Woode was working in Boston at the time, as was trumpeter Herb Pomeroy . Bird brought drummer Kenny Clarke from New York; The pianist on the second performance was Sir Charles Thompson . This time, too, a 30-minute program was broadcast from the club. In the beginning of Parker's " Now's the Time " McLellan speaks his announcement again; then again at the end of the gig on " Groovin 'High ". Another track rarely played by Parker was the Rodgers / Hart classic "Dancing on the Ceiling".

Rating of the album

Richard Cook and Brian Morton, who gave the album the highest rating in their Penguin Guide to Jazz , count Charlie Parker at Storyville among the most important live albums, alongside Bird at St. Nick’s (1950) and the Jazz at Massey Hall album from 1953 Documentaries by the late Charlie Parker. Scott Yanow states in the All Music Guide that while the recording quality of the radio recordings was only sufficient, Parker was in great shape during these sessions and was playing hot versions of his usual repertoire.
